According to the London Evening Standard, new Manchester City signing Zinchenko’s agent claimed that Wenger wanted the 19-year-old two years ago.
The 19-year-old made the switch to the Etihad Stadium this Summer from Russian side FC Ufa and featured for Ukraine at the Euro 2016 in France. He is highly rated and many claim he will be a future star for Ukraine.
The 19-year-old had been at Shakhtar Donetsk until he left club on a free transfer around 12 months ago and his agent claims it was during his time at that club when Arsene Wenger spotted his player and wanted to sign him.
However, the deal fell through and a potential move to the Emirates was eventually cancelled.
“Two years ago, Arsene Wenger phoned me,” the London Evening Standard reports Zinchenko’s as saying.
“Zinchenko was 17 then and Shakhtar played Arsenal in the UEFA Youth League. Arsene watched the match and immediately called me, saying: ‘I need Zinchenko’.”
“[Arsenal] made an offer but there were some problems and then Zinchenko was discovered by a lot of people.”
It now remains to be seen whether Arsenal will be left regretting their failure to sign Zinchenko should he go on to be a star at Manchester City.
