Arsenal made a design error with the Emirates Stadium-Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand has claimed on Live with Five that Arsenal made an error when they built the Emirates Stadium.

The stadium was regarded as one of the finest stadiums in football after the project was completed in 2004.

It did take Arsenal away from Highbury though, a move which some supporters still feel has ultimately detracted from their success on the pitch.

And Ferdinand feels that Highbury was the more intimidating place to go.

When opposition

sides went to Arsenal’s old ground, they were greeted with marble halls and a grand design as they walked into the stadium.

There is no such entrance at the Emirates though, and Ferdinand feels it is far less intimidating as a result.

“Arsenal I’ve got a soft spot for and I don’t know why,” Ferdinand said.

“It’s the old marble walls! When you used to walk in [at Highbury], it used to just feel so grand.

“It was like a mini Buckingham Palace when you used to walk in those walls.

“That’s the big thing they should have done, they should have kept those marble halls somewhere in that stadium [at the Emirates].

“It was part of the experience. You used to walk through those doors at Arsenal and the history just hit you. You’d think ‘we’re going to have to go some to win today boys’.

“But you lose that when it’s a brand new stadium.”

Arsenal’s home record certainly hasn’t been as strong since they moved to the Emirates.

The Gunners used to have an air of invincibility at Highbury, but their form, particularly in recent seasons, at home hasn’t been massively strong.

Arsenal did at least give the Emirates crowd something to cheer at the weekend, as they beat Norwich City 1-0 to get their first victory of the new campaign.

Arsenal will be looking to continue from where they stop when they come against Burnley on Saturday.
