The rumour mill is flying again and this time it has conjured up the possibility of Dragovic joining up with Manchester United. Speculation has probably been fuelled further after the Reds conceding 3 goals at St James Park in midweek , cementing the need to strengthen the defence in the mind of fans and LVG alike.
Dragovic is an Austrian centre back, who happens to share a birthday with me at 3 years my junior, playing for Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine. Before that he spent a couple of years at FC Basel, well known to both United and Chelsea fans, and he was in the team that played Chelsea in the Europa League semi finals.
Chris Smalling has been an absolute rock at centre back for United up until the last game where he made uncharacteristic errors. The lack of a consistent solid tackling natural centre back partner is hindering Smalling in my opinion and signing a centre back would give LVG the option of playing Daley Blind further forward and linking the defence to midfield along with Schneiderlin / Schweinsteiger , possibly with Fellaini paying the price.
This one isn’t nailed on yet but there isn’t usually this much smoke without fire, and we have had success with a centre back of his mould from that part of the world before so I think he would be an excellent addition to the squad, especially if we can get him for a rumoured 16 million pounds.
Given the fact people like Stones, Hummels or Godin wouldn’t be available mid-season, I think this is an alternative that should seriously be looked at.
